Of the many factors driving the green industry today, eco travel is one idea that is at once both attractive and controversial. So what is eco travel and why is it a hot topic of debate?

Eco Travel is a means of travel that considers economics and ecology in the decision making process of where you’ll go, how you’ll get there, where you’ll stay . . . and even what to do once you’ve arrived! At the core of understanding eco-lifestyle is the idea of minimizing our individual and collective human “footprint”, or the impact we make by our actions upon the environment. Let’s face it, every time you fly, drive your car or use other traditional modes of transportation for travel – it may get you to where you’re going fast, but the by-product produces a negative effective on the environment.

Planet Travel Guide

Millions of dollars are being spent by the travel industry at large. From transportation and lodging, to service and touring organizations, the hope is to reduce or offset their business impact on the environment either because they are true eco stewards, or as a means to align themselves with a rapidly growing and highly publicized consensus that we humans “should” and desperately need to care about the one planet we all share.

Some critics are proposing an immediate and aggressive change in travel behavior, such as opting not to travel and stay at home. But for many, that is an impractical solution to a broad and complex issue. Certainly, pondering such an extreme shift can bring one to come up with a multitude of less severe options along the spectrum…many which can be applied on a personal level, and some which could be shared with family and friends to help bring a brighter awareness to the topic.

According to the Natural Marketing Institute (NMI) and Silvercliffe Media, Inc. industry report for 2005, Eco Travel represents a .2B industry. Many countries depend solely upon tourism for their economic survival. So where do we strike a balance? For those who aren’t quite ready for homebound adventure, yet want to approach travel responsibly – here are a few resources to help you on your sustainable travel path.

CONSIDER ECO FRIENDLY LODGING

Great hospitality is something we all hope to fin d in our travels, but when it comes to green lodging, this can be a challenging task – especially for chemically sensitive individuals or those simply looking to be more in tuned with nature. From cabins and small inns, to major hotels and resorts, eco friendly lodging has become the new essential for travel.

Lapis Lane Guest House & Cabin, Whidbey WA

Lapis Lane Guesthouse and Cabin on Whidbey Island , WA are owned and operated by Elaine and Dimitri Michaelides. The property is situated on 6-acres; it’s private but easily accessible from the Clinton Ferry Station. The lovely tree lined sanctuary has been described as a “creative refuge”, donning two secluded , separate residences and a gallery/meeting space that can serve your solo retreat, romantic getaway, creative adventure or small gathering. Lapis Lane Guesthouse is situated on the west side of Whidbey Island, allowing you to capture magnificent views of the Olympic Mountains and beautiful sunsets over the Puget Sound.

“Enjoy an evening walk through wooded paths under beautiful old Fir trees. See and hear owls and coyotes. During the day bald eagles soar overhead. In August and September pick buckets of juicy wild blackberries right outside your front door.”

Both the Guest House and Cabin feature non-toxic, chemically-free living spaces, use of 100% Cotton Linens, and a recycling system. And, you won’t have to leave the property to find healthy produce. Just a short walk up the path from the Guest House is an organic heirloom garden, lovingly tended by owner and landscape consultant Elaine Michaelides – who graciously greets her guests with a bounty of fresh veggies upon arrival. Elaine created the garden herself, which provides year-round produce for her family and guests. In addition to managing the property with her husband Dimitri, Elaine extends her earth-friendly talents across the island, providing expertise in the methods of organic heirloom gardening, landscape, and seed cultivation.

The Lapis Lane Guest House is equipped with a full kitchen and pantry for your convenience. To help ease your cares away, the Guest House also features a wonderful sky-lit steam room with Jacuzzi bath. Practice your chanting while you’re in there relaxing and gazing at the starry night sky; the high ceilings provide amazing acoustics and give a whole new meaning to “singing in the shower”. If that’s not dreamy enough for you, wrap-up in one of the plush cotton robes provided, or simply melt into one of the luxurious featherbeds for the ultimate sunlit nap or an incredible night’s sleep.

When you’re ready to explore, continue a few steps further up the path from the garden and you’ll find the working studio of Elaine’s husband, Dimitri Michaelides, a nationally renowned glass artist. Michaelides who incorporates a practice of sustainability through the use of recycled glass and energy saving methods in his work process, was one of 72 artists selected by The Smithsonian, for inclusion in the permanent White House Collection of American Crafts. The Guest House and Cabin are graced with his beautiful work, distinguished by the use of bright colors to create vessels adorned with his signature hand blown birds.

If you’re lucky, you might catch Dimitri at work. The grace, speed and patience with which he works to create his art is magical . . . an amazing sight to see!

Next time you’re in the Washington area, be sure to discover Lapis Lane Guest House. It’s a lovely, relaxing and environmentally conscious option.

New Year’s Eve is celebrated with great pomp and show universally. Different places have different ways of welcoming the New Year, each having a stamp of its own culture. The Strip in Las Vegas, the Niagara Falls in Canada, the Sydney Harbour in New South Wales, and Prague in the Czech Republic are famous for their New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The Strip in Las Vegas or the Las Vegas Strip, as it is popularly known, is a part of the Las Vegas Boulevard South in Clark County, Nevada, and is about 6 km in length. Several of the world’s famous hotels, casinos, resorts, restaurants and other sky-scrapers are located on the Las Vegas Strip. The Strip with its lightings is a visual delight during the night. The New Year’s Eve festivities of the Strip are very famous for its events, parties and fireworks. Top celebrities of the world attend the celebrations as guests as well as hosts to usher in the New Year in style. The casinos and hotels organise special parties and events for which seats are sold out days or months before the real occasion. The fireworks that begin with the countdown to midnight are a brilliant explosion of colours that light up the sky. As the sun goes down on the Eve, the Strip is thrown open to the public who can explore the Strip and watch the fireworks from different vantage points. Tourists from all over the world throng this place on the New Year’s Eve to absorb and take back home the spirit of the celebration.

World Travel Destinations

The firework display over the mighty Niagara Falls on the New Year’s Eve renders the Falls more spectacular. There will be an Outdoor Concert Extravaganza organized this year at the Queen Victoria Park which would be made memorable with the participation of top entertainers and singers. Grand parties and gala events will be organized by the hotels around the venue. The Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights from November 7, 2009 to January 4, 2010 and the Niagara Parks Winter Wonderland along a five-kilometer route featuring two million lights and 100 lighting displays are the biggest highlights of the celebrations at the Falls. Brilliant firework displays will be conducted every Friday during this period with a special show and illumination on the New Year’s Eve. The Falls will be illumined on both the American and the Canadian sides presenting a visual feast for the multitudes of expectant onlookers who have traveled from even far-away corners of the world.

The Sydney Harbour, which is the most beautiful natural harbour in the world with its arresting landscape, appealing shoreline and skyline and the backdrop of an enticing horizon, is the world’s most perfect setting for New Year’s Eve celebrations. The city lights around the harbour, the stars twinkling overhead and reflecting in an enchanting sparkle on the dark waters of the Sydney Harbour at night present the world’s best lighting arrangement, not to mention the lighting decorations on the Harbour Bridge, Opera House, various other landmarks, buildings and even the cruise boats. The high-rise buildings in the surroundings of the harbour and various points on the Harbour Bridge provide strategic locations for launching fireworks. Firecrackers are also launched from barges. The synchronized thematic display of fireworks is watched by people from the shore and from the boats that cruise the harbour as part of Harbour of Light Parade. The televised display is watched by people all around the world.

Prague in the Czech Republic is another popular New Year’s Eve destination. On the 31st of December evening, the clubs and music bars of the city come alive with parties, music and dancing and other festivities to ring in the New Year. Party boats and jazz cruises are also aplenty in Prague. Towards midnight there are firework displays. People watch the fireworks from various entertainment venues and cruise boats. There are firework displays at venues that overlook the Vltava River as well as around town squares like the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. In addition to aerial displays, fireworks are set off by the adventurous public too!

New Year’s Eve holiday destinations are galore; choose yours with care so that you have the kind of holiday that you have always longed for. And don’t take too long a while deciding your destination, or the tickets for your favourite events and shows may run out!

Today, Norm Goldman, Editor of Sketchandtravel.com and Bookpleasures.com is delighted to have as a guest well- known author and travel writer, Christopher P. Baker.

Christopher is an expert on Cuba and Jamaica, as well as other venues in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Coastal Resorts

Christopher was named Travel Journalist Of The Year by the Jamaica Tourist Board in 1998. He is here to discuss with us Jamaica.

Good Day Christopher and thank you for accepting our invitation to be interviewed.

NORM:

Please tell our readers something about yourself, your expertise and the

books you have authored.

Christopher:

I grew up and was educated in England, where I began my international travels while studying geography at university. After settling in California in 1980, I worked briefly within the adventure travel industry. I’ve been a full-time professional travel writer and photographer since 1982.

Although in my early career I specialized in adventure travel, and also the Asia/Pacific region, during the past 15 years I have specialized in the Caribbean, with a particular focus on and fondness for Cuba. My love affair with Cuba began with publication of my Moon Handbooks Cuba and Moon Handbooks Havana.

I’ve since written National Geographic Traveler Cuba and Mi Moto Fidel: Motorcycling Through Castro’s Cuba, a literary travelog that won both the Lowell Thomas Award as Travel Book of the Year and the North American Travel Journalists Association’s Grand Prize. My most recent book is Cuba Classics: A Celebration of Vintage American Automobiles (Interlink Books, 2004), a lavishly illustrated coffee-table book.

I’ve authored numerous other books, including Lonely Planet’s guidebooks to Jamaica and The Bahamas and Turk & Caicos Islands, plus the Passport Illustrated Guide to Jamaica. I’ve also written about Jamaica (and other Caribbean islands and international destinations) for dozens of leading magazines and newspaper travel sections, including as a regular contributor to SkyWritings (Air Jamaica’s inflight magazine) and Caribbean Travel & Life.

My other main expertise is in regard to Costa Rica. My first guidebook was the Moon Handbook Costa Rica (first published as the Costa Rica Handbook in 1992), now in its fifth edition, with almost 100,000 copies sold. I’ve since authored National Geographic Traveler Costa Rica and the soon-to-be-released Eyewitness Travel Guide to Costa Rica (Dorling Kindersley), and have acted as a consultant to INTEL, which recently opened a fabrication plant in Costa Rica.

I love public speaking and have been interviewed on numerous national television and radio shows. I’m particularly honoured to have been addressed the National Press Club and the National Geographic Society (as a member of the Live from& faculty), and to have been a faculty member of the lecturing staff of Cunard Cruise Lines. In January, and again in May, I’ll be lecturing about old cars in Cuba aboard Holland America Cruise Line’s M/V Maasdam.

Complete details about my books and writing career are available on my website.

NORM:

Where is Jamaica and could you tell our readers something about it from the point of view of climate, activities a couple can experience, etc

Christopher:

Jamaica lies south of Cuba in the western half of the Caribbean. It was for several centuries under British rule and has maintained close ties with the United Kingdom since independence in 1962. Jamaica is among the most distinctive of Caribbean isles, primarily as the birthplace of Rastafarianism, which suffuses the culture, as does the music of the island’s most famous native son Bob Marley.

Though rimmed by coastal plains and fine sandy beaches, Jamaica is predominantly mountainous. In the east, the Blue Mountains (known for the world-famous coffee grown here) rise to 7,402 feet. Despite its relatively small size, the isle boasts several distinct climates: the mountainous northeast, centered on the old banana-shipping port of Port Antonio, receives copious rainfall and is exceedingly lush, whereas the relatively flat south-central coast, centered on Treasure Beach, lies in a rain shadow and the predominant vegetation is cactus and thorn scrub.

Jamaica is remarkably well developed in terms of activities. Visitors can choose from jet skiing, scuba diving, and sunset boat trips to mountain biking, crocodile safaris, and horseback rides.

NORM:

Would you consider Jamaica a good choice for a romantic getaway or wedding and honeymoon destination? Why?

Christopher:

Jamaica prides itself on being a perfect wedding and honeymoon destination. Many resorts specialize in this market. Some, such as SuperClubs and Sandals (both known for their all-inclusive, couples-only resorts) even offer free wedding packages. The all-inclusive concept was born in Jamaica and no other destination has so successfully matured and marketed the concept.

I enjoy these all-inclusive resorts, which are run to very high standards. However, my favourite romantic retreats lie at the other end of the spectrum, in small boutique hotels offering a combination of ultra-chic ambience and intimacy that is synonymous with romance. Again, Jamaica excels, with local entrepreneur Chris Blackwell’s Island Outpost group having conceived some of the most welcoming and delightful boutique hotels in the world. They draw notables from Naomi Campbell to Pierce Brosnan, but fortunately most are surprisingly affordable.

NORM:

What is the best time to visit Jamaica from the point of view

of weather, costs, crowds, and the availability of flights from the USA, Canada

and Europe?

Christopher:

Weather wise, there are only two seasons: wet (May-Nov) and dry (Dec-April). The best time to visit is during dry season, when rainfall is at a minimum and most of the island basks in sunshine.

In summer, prolonged afternoon showers or heavy downpours are typical island wide. Several days or even weeks of unbroken rain are also possible in summer, however, especially in the northeast, although this varies year to year. Summer and fall are also hurricane season, although the chance of a hurricane actually striking the island is relatively slim.

All that said, most of my guidebook research has been undertaken during summer, which has the added advantage of lower prices and less crowds in the most popular resorts, such as Negril and Montego Bay. Flight service to Jamaica which is well served by both scheduled and charter service varies according to season, although there is daily service from throughout Canada and the USA year-round. The best airfare deals are off-season, in summer.

NORM:

How safe is it to travel to Jamaica?

Christopher:

I first hitchhiked around Jamaica in 1978 and have spent almost 30 years traveling the isle without undue problems.

Concerns over safety should not dissuade visitors from choosing Jamaica, except during times of civil unrest. However, Jamaica’s reputation as being unsafe is based on several regrettable realities.

The first is the prevalence of drugs throughout Jamaica society, and the violence that is always associated with the trade is an ever-present undercurrent. Almost every visitor can expect to be approached to buy drugs at some stage during their holiday.

In places such as Negril, the constant entreaties to buy drugs, souvenirs, sexual favors, or similar services by seemingly (or actually) aggressive hustlers can be wearying and is one reason that the all-inclusive resorts have been so successful.

To its credit, the Jamaica Tourist Board has cracked down on hustling in the two other prime tourist destinations, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. I discuss how best to handle this in my Lonely Planet guidebook.

The other aspect that should be addressed is the irascible, quick-to-anger nature of a large segment of Jamaican society. The local temperament can be unusually volatile, and resolution of disputes is often sought through violence.

Many areas of Kingston are entirely unsafe for unescorted visitors. However, this all paints far too gloomy a picture from the perspective of prospective visitors.

The other segment of the Jamaican population comprises the most gracious and hospitable people you could encounter, and the standards of service at most hotels is world-class, not least thanks to the efforts and example set by the training programs and educational outreach of Sandals and SuperClubs, whose influence nationwide extends well beyond the tourist sector.

NORM:

Could you give our readers an idea of the costs involved if travel

originates from the USA or Canada and how accessible is it to fly Jamaica?

Christopher:

Jamaica is served by direct flights from major hubs and cities through Canada and the USA. Most flights serve Montego Bay, often with onward service to Kingston. There is great variation in airfares, not least between seasons and whether flying mid-week or on weekends.

For scheduled non-stop flights originating on weekends in high season, fares begin at about 0 from Miami, 0 from New York, and 0 from Los Angeles. Lesser fares can be obtained if visitors choose flights that require plane changes en route.

Air Jamaica, the national carrier, offers the most competitive rates and is an exceptionally well-run airline with excellent service. Charter operators offer flights from most major urban centers at prices about 10-20% below schedule flights. The cheapest deals are package rates combining airfare and hotel accommodation, offered by charter operators.

NORM:

If you had to choose 6 unequalled venues in Jamaica for a

romantic getaway, honeymoon or wedding destination, what would they be and why?

Christopher:

*Treasure Beach, with accommodation at Jake’s Place, a romantic, totally offbeat and laid-back yet well-run and chic hotel that epitomizes the unpretentious local spirit. It’s perfect for couples who want to laze away their time doing very little but laze in a hammock between bouts of making love.

*Negril is the beach-maven’s favourite, perfect for couples seeking a great beach, lots of watersports by day, and a zesty yet unpretentious nightlife. There’s a wide choice of hotels, including all-inclusive resorts for couples-only, as well as some excellent boutique hotels, including The Caves a world-class contender for most romantic resort in the world.

*Strawberry Hill, in the Blue Mountains. Old world ambience combines with contemporary savoir-faire at this mountain retreat a mile above Kingston. The cuisine is fabulous. There’s a tremendous garden, plus mountain hiking nearby. Another chic boutique option from Island Outpost.

*Hedonism II or III (both run by SuperClubs) are almost always booked solid with couples whose idea of a romantic vacation is to get nude, play sexy antics in public, or even to share them (literally) with other couples. Yes, many weddings are performed here& often in the nude. No prudes allowed!

*Mandeville. This modestly prosperous, easy-paced town in the central highlands is set amid stunning scenery reminiscent of the English Dales and best enjoyed by rental car. The town has some fine restaurants, and there are some pleasant hikes locally.

*Port Antonio. If you like lush, this is for you, as the area receives large amounts of rainfall& but not all the time. It’s famous for its fine hotels run to traditional standards, such as the somewhat aloof Trident and Jamaica Palace. My recommendation is to choose either the Hotel Mocking Bird Hill (a classy, eco-sensitive boutique hotel with gourmet cuisine, run by delightful artsy owners Shireen Agra and Barbara Walker), or to rent a private deluxe villa overhanging the Blue Lagoon.

NORM:

Are there any special requirements for couples wishing to celebrate their marriage in Jamaica?

Christopher:

Unlike most Caribbean destinations, visitors can get married after only 24 hours on the island. The following notarized documents are required: proof of citizenship; certified copies of appropriate divorce or death certificates with regard to prior spouses; and written parental consent for any party under 18 years of age. French Canadians need a notarized translated copy of all documents and a photocopy of the original French documents.

The Registrar General’s Department of Jamaica WEBSITE has additional information, including a downloadable Online Marriage Certificate Application.

NORM:

What resources are available on the Internet pertaining to weddings and honeymoon vacations in Jamaica?

Christopher: The Jamaica Tourist Board has complete information on planning a wedding vacation at its WEBSITE.

NORM

Is there anything else you would like to add that we have not covered

pertaining to Jamaica?

Christopher:

A visit to Jamaica needs careful planning to ensure that you’re getting what you plan. More than any other destination I know, visitors have a love it or hate it reaction, most of which seems to relate to their particular interactions with locals. The island is physically beautiful, the food excitingly spicy and varied, and the music infectious.

Thank you Christopher for your most informative interview.

Norm and his wife Lily are a unique husband and wife team, writer and water colorist, who write and paint about romantic destinations and wedding destinations.

Basically, they meld art and words in order to create an unusual travel story, which generates interest, particularly because of the fact that each painting appears to have been ‘custom-made’ for the story-original story and original art. Combining the watercolors with travel writing provides a softer, more romantic look at the places they visit.

Cheeses come in all sorts of shapes forms flavors and aromas and are produced in many countries worldwide. There are types of cheese to suit just about every taste. Cheese can be used in numerous ways from grilling, frying, baking or even on its own. You can get soft, hard, semi-hard, creamed and even spreadable cheese.

The most popular cheese is probably Cheddar, which is a hard cheese that does not have any cracks or mould. It is available in a range from mild to mature and is suitable for just about anything from putting on a sandwich, to baking with or using as a sauce. Another type of cheese is blue cheese. This has an acquired taste due to its distinct taste and aroma which only some people enjoy. It will have either a blue or green mould. The most common types of blue cheese include Roquefort, Gorgonzola or Danish and they are particularly popular as dressings to have over a salad.

Planet Travel Guide

Another cheese which has a distinct taste is goat cheese which is made from goat’s milk. This cheese, which is soft and easily spreadable, is said to be healthier than most other cheeses due to its low calorie content.

Feta cheese, which has Greek origins, is another soft cheese which is easy to crumble and white in colour. It is very popular in salads and goes hand-in-hand with a Greek salad in particular. It is available in a number of different flavours such as Herb, black pepper, salted, or even low fat.

Mascarpone cheese is an Italian cheese which is renowned for its creamy texture and taste. Unfortunately it is very high in fat and calorie content. This cheese is also light in colour and is popular for both savoury and desert purposes.

Cheeses have come a long way since they were first introduced thousands of years ago. They can be used in just about any dish and are available in varying flavours and forms with types of cheese to suit every palate.

Vacationers are forever looking for the best and brightest destinations in the world, and over the past few years, more and more travelers are working their way toward South America and finding out what Brazil has to offer.

The culture of this Portuguese-influenced country is unique in the continent, whose other countries have a history of Spanish colonialisation. On top of that, the coastal city Rio is home to some of the world’s sexiest beaches. The combination of culture and scenery is more than enough to entice tourists, but resorts like the Ponta dos Ganchos add that extra bit of luxury that makes people never want to leave.

Coastal Resorts

The Ponta dos Ganchos resort is situated on a unique piece of property that most Brazilian vacationers will never get to see unless they travel there specifically. Ganchos is located directly on a privately-owned peninsula and sits directly in between two of the area’s most picturesque fishing villages, each with its own unique culture in the context of Brazilian living.

The result is a resort that stands out as even more luxurious due to its humble-yet scenic and original-surroundings. Because of the location and the private nature of the resort, it has quickly become one of the best in all of Brazil.

Ponta dos Ganchos is also ideal in terms of location and ease of getting to other major Brazilian destinations. It’s only a hop, skip and a jump from Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo.

The resort is purported to be more on the romantic side, meaning that the villas are very secluded, the land is free from outside intrusion, and the staff will stay out of your way unless requested to do otherwise. The spot where the Emerald Coast runs into the rain forest is a sight in itself; the fact that there’s a resort there now really works to boost the area’s profile.

All in all, there are 25 private bungalows at the resort, including a commons area and other areas where guests can congregate. The real feature that sets Ponta dos Ganchos apart from competing resorts is the pure privacy factor. The resort is situated on over 24 acres of land, meaning that the bungalows are really secluded and strewn across the area. The land also features beautifully landscaped gardens, ponds and other landscaping features that give Ganchos a tranquil look and feel.

Even though the bungalows are built in an old Brazilian style and the surrounding area feels “homey” in the sense that it all blends in together, the designers pulled no punches when it was time to accessorize.

Each bungalow has state-of-the-art features, like flat-screen televisions, an electronic safe, internet connection, and other features like plush king-sized beds, a mini bar and large, open bathrooms. The open-plan villas-the more expensive of the bungalows-have their own private gardens and decks, as well as pools, a sauna, walk-in closets, and much more.

Other facilities at the resort include an indoor pool, a cinema, game room, fitness center, a tennis court, and a Christian Dior spa and plenty more.

Every bride dreams of her wedding day. For the ultimate dream wedding, every facet from the wedding ceremony right through the reception and honeymoon, should be perfect.

A couple’s wedding and honeymoon are two of the happiest times of their lives. Planning these special times can be fun and exciting, but hours of research are required in order to make the right decisions. In recent years many couples have realized the time, effort and expense of planning a wedding and a honeymoon can be too much and decide to combine them to create the perfect destination wedding.

Destinations Guide

Destination Weddings have become an increasingly popular wedding trend, with the number of Destination Weddings tripling over the past 10-years.

Brides and Grooms are increasingly considering variations of the traditional wedding ceremonies. In many cases arrangements may be more relaxed and less stressful for the couple, and because the weddings may of necessity be smaller, the wedding may also be less expensive. Usually the destination wedding location also becomes the honeymoon site.

An average wedding in the US costs ,000 – ,000 and consists of 150-200 guests. By reducing the number of guests and combining the wedding and honeymoon, a Destination Wedding can provide a more memorable, intimate experience at a fraction of the cost.

The most common destination in the United States is Las Vegas, followed by the mountains of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. For Beach Weddings, Florida, Mexico, the Caribbean and Hawaii are popular choices. Many Cruise lines also offer wedding and honeymoon packages with options of shipboard chapels or weddings at various ports. And yet another option, is a Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings at Walt Disney World® Resort, which has become one of the most popular vacation destinations on the planet.

Regardless of the location selected, a Destination Wedding can be a romantic, memorable alternative to a traditional wedding. Destination Weddings provide the ultimate setting to celebrate your endless love for each other at a location where all your wedding and honeymoon dreams can come true.

With 1185 islands to choose from, Croatia’s Adriatic coast truly offers an embarrassment of riches. Whether your interest is lounging lizard-like in the sun, exploring ancient villages, hiking through lavender fields or partying until dawn, there’s an island in Croatia for you. And you don’t need your own yacht to see them! All of the following islands are easily reachable by regular ferries run by Jadrolinija, Croatia’s largest ferry company. Let’s start at the southern tip of Croatia and work our way northward.

Mljet Island

Planet Travel Guide

A good part of Mljet Island is pristine national park including two inland seawater lakes that present the very picture of tranquility. You can bike around the lakes, paddle or swim them or take a hike through the interior. Most people visit on a day trip from Dubrovnik, but there’s no reason you can’t stay overnight. There’s only one hotel but a good amount of private accommodation.

Korcula Island

Large and forested, Korcula offers endless possibilities for exploration. Start in the Old Town, crowded onto a little peninsula and then explore some quiet islets around the main island via excursion boat. To get away from it all, stay in one of the interior villages.

Hvar Island

Unquestionably the trendiest of Croatian islands, it seems that everybody wants to head to Hvar. The old town is impossibly romantic, the harbor is the most delightful in the Adriatic and the nightlife. . .Suffice it to say that you’ll find everything from chic cocktail bars to down ‘n’ dirty backpacker joints (although much more of the former). During the day, take a boat to the naturist islands that beckon offshore or traipse through the lavender fields that dot the interior.

Brac Island

The most accessible island from the Dalmatian coast, Brac is a favorite getaway for Croatian mainlanders. Cheaper and somewhat less crowded with foreigners, Brac Island’s highlight is the unusual Zlatni Rat beach, a staple of Croatia’s tourist brochures. Supetar is the main entry point and boasts an appealing “fishing port” ambiance.

Vis Island

Here is that special gem that is still relatively undiscovered, mostly because Vis Island is a long ferry ride from the coast. But it’s so worth it. Neither hip nor chic (yet), Vis has the unspoiled nature, the swimming and diving possibilities plus two great villages. Vis Town has early Greek and Roman remnants and Komiza is the kind of charming fishing village that is rapidly disappearing from the Mediterranean. Think St Tropez about, oh, 100 years ago.

Dugi Otok

Also not on the tourist circuit, Dugi Otok is long and relatively flat compared to the other islands. Still, there’s good swimming and a calm and peaceful atmosphere. It’s main highlight is the Telascica Bay nature park with a saltwater lake and miles of rugged coastline.

Pag Island

All Croatians sigh over Pag Island as it produces the country’s finest cheese, pungent and aromatic. Dry and flat, Pag Island still boasts a kind of offbeat beauty. The main town is Pag Town, with its straight, stone streets but party people will want to head to Novalja on the northern end of the island. At the first thought of summer, Novalja’s main beach is transformed into a non-stop outdoor party with DJs, cocktail bars, foam nights and a regular circuit of theme events.

Cres & Losinj Islands

These two long thin islands are separated only by a narrow canal. Losinj in the south is much more developed for tourism with a range of hotels and a magnificent bay that is a center for windsurfing. Cres is much wilder and mostly devoted to fishing and sheep raising. Accommodation is somewhat limited in terms of both comforts and quantity but it’s easy to stay in Losinj and visit Cres.

Rab Island

This is a pretty island near the northern coast with scenic Rab Town as its center. Tourism is very developed here largely because of the splendid sandy beaches in Lopar. Sandy beaches are a rarity in Croatia! This is the place for an easy, relaxing beach holiday.

Krk Island

With an airport receiving international flights right on the island, Krk is one of the easiest islands to reach. Desolate it isn’t but you’ll find a wide choice of places to stay on this large island. Visit the historic center, walled Krk Town but also Baska with its long stretch of pebbly beach and the hilltop village of Vrbnik.

Visualize the scene of your little kids playing in a playhouse just outside your kitchen window; or your very own tool shed for gardening or barn tools; or a beautiful garden swing nestled in a secluded, shady part at the side of your house. Possibly instead, your backyard would be more beautiful with a bridge over a marshy area that has always been problematic. Decorative, functional, or just for fun, amenities and enhancements outside your home can increase its living area and value providing hours relaxing and safe outdoor living for your family. Outdoor structures can be easy-to-build, inexpensive and transform your yard into a very useful and highly practical work place or a relaxing and restful hideaway.

First thing to do is choose which structure to undertake building and installing, considering your budget and the available space in your garden and by thinking what is the most needed by your family members. It can be an outdoor play set for your children, putting slides, swings, monkey bars, sandbox or playhouse. You can also extend your house and put a deck on it to provide a transition between the constructed deck and the natural grass. Another option is a gazebo, cabana or tables for special occasion or just by eating outside your home. It can also be a functional rustic tool shed where you can work and store your crafting equipments. Be creative and combine structures such as a tool shed with a playhouse on its side that your kids will surely love. After checking your property and deciding what structure you will build, you can proceed to the next step.

Outdoor Equipment

In orienting the proper place of your structure in your lot, consider the purpose, users and what kind of structure you will build. For example, if you are building a play set, choose an area that is visible from windows in places where you can always watch for your children. If you chose a gazebo, it will serve as the focal point of your garden. It is vital to conceptualize how the structures will blend in your landscape. Then, prepare your lot by draining away the water from the columns or it will weaken your foundation. Remove the turfs and weeds so there will be no hindrances in your construction. Lastly, start constructing the structure by hiring professionals. You can also do it yourself if it is an easy-to-build structure and you have enough tools.

Put garden pathways to your structure to because it has functional benefits such as keeping your feet dry and decreasing soil compaction. An inviting walkway can improve your garden and turn everyday walks into unfolding journeys. Pathways can give you a sense of direction and makes your backyard more appealing to the eye. You can use inexpensive materials such as field stones and play with different sizes and shapes. Then add flowering plants that will complement with your structure. After all this work, you can enjoy your personalized, beautiful, and functional backyard of your own. With the proper planning, you can make a comforting getaway right in the middle of your garden.
